From Paris to Amboise

Yesterday, we went by bus from Paris to the town of Amboise, in the Loire Valley, where many kings and princes and noblemen built beautiful chateaux, or castles. It took about three hours to get there. In the Middle Ages, for a short time, the capital of France was in Amboise, where the king lived with his court. The castle is high on a hill (to defend from attackers) and has a gorgeous chapel. Can you imagine going to a church like this?

The French king asked Leonardo da Vinci to move here from Italy and gave him a big house to live in. He lived here the last four years of his life. He was not only a great painter, but also an inventor, and in the basement of this house there is a display of many of his inventions. IBM created life-sized models from his drawings.

In the Middle Ages, the streets were narrow, with a ditch in the middle to catch all the dirty water. I saw someone throw some dirty water into this street!

Today, the streets are lined with sidewalk cafes. We stopped at one for a crepe. Yum!
